POLICY UPDATE – Well vs Sick Visit… What is the Difference?

Understanding the difference between sick and well visits can save you both time and money when navigating the healthcare system. While well visits focus on prevention and maintaining good health through screenings and check-ups, sick visits address specific symptoms or conditions that require immediate attention. Knowing which type of appointment you need helps ensure you receive appropriate care and avoid unexpected costs that might result from combining these services.

View the following to understand our new policy and billing update for well and sick visits.

Annual Well Visit/Yearly Sports Physical

This type of visit is performed in the absence of signs, symptoms, injuries, or chronic health conditions. The provider will review age/gender specific counseling on vaccines and health screenings.

  • Covered only once, within 12 months after the age of 3.
  • Patients usually pay nothing with most in-network health insurance plans.

Sick Visit or Follow- Up Visit for Chronic Conditions

This type of visit is for the patient who presents with a sign, symptom, injury, or a chronic health condition that needs to be evaluated.

  • You receive treatment for new or chronic health conditions including performing tests, receiving orders for labs or imaging, and prescribing or renewing medications.
  • Most health insurance plans will pass some of the cost on to you such as deductibles, copayment or co-insurance.

Annual Well Visit/ Yearly Sports Physical and Sick or Follow-Up on the Same Day.

There may be times when you will have both types of visits performed on the same day.

  • You receive treatment for new or chronic health conditions during your annual wellness/physical. This may result in two visit charges.
  • This may be a benefit so you do not need to make another appointment and return on a separate date. This may also depend on the type of visit and the provider that you are seeing. You do have the option to return on a separate date, if you choose.
  • You may receive a bill for a portion of the visit for the deductible, copayment or co-insurance. This amount will vary based on your health insurance coverage. If you are prescheduled for your well and chronic condition appointment, a copay or deductible may be due at the time of service.

About Pediatrics of Florence

We believe that children are more than just “little adults.” They have unique personalities, challenges, and life circumstances and we have made every effort to make our offices and care as “kid friendly” as possible. We have an aquatic theme in the waiting rooms (separated for sick and well children) as well as themed examination rooms. All of our physicians are Board Certified Pediatricians and members of the American Academy of Pediatrics and our nurse practitioners are all licensed Pediatric Nurse Practitioners and are available to see both well and sick children.
