It seems that young people are not listening to all the years of sex education because they account for half of all new sexually transmitted infections. The report from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that there are more than 19.7 million new sexually transmitted infections in the United States each year, and young people ages 15-24 account for half of them.
The CDC says “Abstaining from sex, reducing the number of sexual partners, and consistently and correctly using condoms are all effective STI prevention strategies.”
Some of the infections the young people are getting…
- chlamydia
- gonorrhea
- hepatitis B virus (HBV)
- herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2)
- human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
- human papillomavirus (HPV)
- syphilis
- trichomoniasis
