The importance of exercise

Keeping kids from becoming overweight can be difficult these days.  More and more society is becoming aware of how poor the nutritional value is of the foods marketed to youth.  Food aside, I want to be an advocate for how important it is to keep up the calorie-burning engine with lots of exercise.

A recent study looked at adolescents who were normal weight and those who were overweight.  The group of overweight kids took in an average of about 2500 calories per day while the normal weight kids took in an average of about 2700 calories per day.  How did they take in more and maintain the proper weight?  Increased exercise.

The drinks and food going in your child's mouth are very important, but don't forget about the importance of turning off all of the screens in the house and staying active.  And, especially for kids, playing and burning calories is a lot more fun than being too concerned about what calories go in.

Improving our practice

There's been a lot going on at Pediatrics of Florence.  If you've read our most recent newsletter, you know we've hired another full time physician and have greatly increased our office hours.  This is all very exciting (and a little scary) for the staff here in the office, but we know it will be great for our patients.  As a parent, being able to take my child to the doctor before going to work is a great convenience.  It also may help clear up those mornings when you are not sure if you should send your child to school or childcare or keep them home.

There is no doubt we will have some adjusting to do as we get used to this new schedule, so please feel free to let us know how things are going or what else we can do to improve our service to you.

Staying active

Okay, my body is mostly recovered from running the Flying Pig Marathon.  Tomorrow I am running in another race - this time much shorter.  This is a 5K walk or run charity event that YOU should participate in.  It is called Jessi's fight for sight and benefits a local girl with Neurofibromatosis.  It is being held in Union at Ryle High School and you can sign up the morning of the race.  Here is more information:

Also, next week is "bike to work" week.  Get out there if you can.  Look for me peddling down Dixie Hwy causing lots of traffic in the early morning!

Setting a Personal Record at the Pig

I guess that running in the rain during training had some benefits.  I posted my best marathon time ever in the pouring rain yesterday.  3 hours, 37 minutes, 29 seconds for the 26.2 mile run.  I'm feeling some pain today but am managing to hobble around the office to work.

Thanks for all of the encouragement from my patients and to anyone who donated to support the Aubrey Rose Foundation.

Follow me to the finish

This year the Flying Pig Marathon has "athlete tracking" - this means that you can be alerted to my progress through the marathon by text message or email as my timing chip crosses different points along the course.

Here is the link to sign up:

And if you haven't donated already, remember you can support me by donating money to the Aubrey Rose Foundation!  To donate go here:

Thanks to all who have been following our training in preparation for Sunday's race.  We would love to see you cheering us on so come on out and see us.
